Spooner Book Group’s Reading Recommendations 11/16/2020
Several people in the reading group recommended The Woman Behind the New Deal: The Life and Legacy of Frances Perkins by Kirstin Downey. This book is an amazing depiction of the first female labor secretary and her impact on politics and FDR.
Amazon says this about the book:
One of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s closest friends and the first female secretary of labor, Perkins capitalized on the president’s political savvy and popularity to enact most of the Depression-era programs that are today considered essential parts of the country’s social safety network.
The Unseen, the first book in Norwegian writer Roy Jacobsen’s Barroy Trilogy, comes warmly recommended. Set on an isolated Norwegian island, this is a brilliant translation with a strong flavor of setting.
Fly Girls: How Five Daring Women Defied All Odds and Made Aviation History by Keith O’Brian. A great book about aviation history.
Long Range, by C.J. Box. The latest Joe Pickett novel came with the recommendation, “Sometimes you just need a good mystery and Box is always good.”
Untamed by Glennon Doyle is a very well written biography, but not a light read. It will take you out of your comfort zone but it should be worth it.
